First edition of this important monograph on the evolution of the map as the first dissected puzzle, the development of the dissected map as an educational tool and the relationship among the booksellers and map makers/dealers of the time. It primarily details an important set of five dissected puzzles, published by John Spilsbury in 1766 and 1767 which were recently discovered, housed in a contemporary 18th century 5-drawer mahogany cabinet with ivory labels. Each dissected map is accompanied by a guide sheet and includes Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Ireland.
